A Study Tool Built for BJJ

What is Matlock?

Matlock is a BJJ study app designed to help practitioners review techniques off the mat. It includes flashcards, daily quizzes, study categories, and a notes repository where you can upload training videos and save techniques to review later.

Who is Matlock for?

Matlock can help practitioners at every belt level, but it is especially useful for white belts and newer students who are learning a large number of techniques, positions, and names for the first time.

Is Matlock only for beginners?

Absolutely not. While beginners may benefit the most from the structured review, forgetting technique names or details happens at every level. As a purple belt myself, I still forget the names of moves sometimes. Matlock is designed for anyone who wants to keep studying and reinforcing what they learn.

Can advanced students use Matlock too?

Yes. More experienced practitioners can still use the flashcards and quizzes for review, while the notes and video features make it easy to organize techniques from training, seminars, or competition preparation.

What techniques are included in Matlock?

Matlock includes fundamental, intermediate, and advanced BJJ techniques. The technique library continues to grow as new content is added.

Does Matlock cover guards, submissions, sweeps, escapes, takedowns, and positions?

Yes. Matlock covers major BJJ categories including guards, submissions, sweeps, escapes, takedowns, positions, passes, and other essential techniques. The library is still expanding.

Review. Quiz. Take Notes. Repeat.

How do the flashcards work?

The flashcards work similarly to other study apps. You are shown a BJJ technique or concept and can test yourself on the answer. They are designed to help with recognition and repetition rather than replace hands-on instruction.

Are there quizzes?

Yes. Matlock includes daily quizzes along with fundamental, intermediate, and advanced quizzes so you can study at the level that works best for you.

Can I take notes on techniques?

Yes. You can save notes about techniques you are learning and upload training videos for future review. You can also favorite flashcards so you can easily return to techniques you want to study again.

Can Matlock help me remember techniques from class?

Yes. Many of the techniques inside Matlock are common BJJ techniques you may already encounter during training. If your coach teaches something that is not currently in the Matlock library, you can add it to your personal notes and upload a video for later review. You can also contact me with technique suggestions for future additions.

Can I track my study streak?

Yes. Your study streak appears at the top of the Matlock home screen so you can keep track of how consistently you have been studying.

Built to Support Your Training - Not Replace It

Does Matlock replace instruction from a BJJ coach?

Absolutely not. Matlock is a study tool meant to support your training, not replace it. The best way to improve at BJJ is still to train BJJ. Matlock simply gives you another way to review and reinforce what you are learning when you are off the mat.

Is Matlock good for people who forget what they learned in class?

Yes. That is one of the main reasons Matlock exists. BJJ involves learning a huge number of positions, techniques, details, and sequences. Repetition helps, and Matlock gives you a way to continue that repetition outside of class.

Can I use Matlock every day without spending a lot of time studying?

Yes. You can use Matlock as much or as little as you want. You might take a quick daily quiz, review a few flashcards, or spend more time going through your notes and training videos.

One Place to Focus on Your BJJ Study

How is Matlock different from YouTube, Instagram, or TikTok?

You may see some of the same techniques on social media, but Matlock is designed specifically for studying BJJ.

Instead of searching through videos or scrolling through unrelated content, you can open one app and focus on flashcards, quizzes, techniques, and your own training notes.

Matlock is less about discovering random techniques and more about helping you remember and review what you are already learning.

How is Matlock different from writing techniques in my phone’s Notes app?

A regular notes app can store text, but Matlock organizes your BJJ study material around your training.

You can save technique notes, upload videos, and categorize what you are learning by areas such as submissions, guards, sweeps, and other BJJ positions and techniques. That makes it easier to find and review your training material later.

Who Should Not Use Matlock?

Matlock may not be the best fit if you are looking for an app that replaces BJJ classes, coaching, or actual mat time.

It also may not be for you if you are mainly looking for long-form instructional courses or detailed step-by-step video instruction. There are other platforms built specifically for that.

Matlock is designed for practitioners who want a simple way to study, review, organize, and remember what they are learning in BJJ.
